Begin with the landscape
Local food reflects steep land, limited space and the sea. Anchovies from Monterosso, basil-based pesto, focaccia, stuffed vegetables and savoury pies all fit that geography. Sciacchetrà and dry local white wines come from terraced vineyards maintained with exceptional labour.
Ask what is actually local today
A dish can be traditional without every ingredient coming from within the Park. Ask calmly about the producer, season and preparation. Choose a smaller menu that changes over a huge menu repeating identical tourist standards.
Respect the table
Reserve at busy times, arrive when agreed and cancel if plans change. Share dietary requirements before ordering. Takeaway is useful, but eat where you are not blocking steps or leaving oil-stained packaging near the harbour.
Do not try to consume every speciality in one day. One carefully chosen wine, one anchovy preparation and one bakery stop create more understanding than a hurried tasting checklist.
