Do not improvise around a closure
Closures can reflect landslides, maintenance, weather alerts or crowd management. A barrier is not an invitation to find a social-media shortcut. Check the National Park’s live map and ask an information point whether a suitable official alternative exists for your experience and footwear.
Build a village day
Use the train to pair contrasting places: Riomaggiore with Corniglia, or Vernazza with Monterosso. Slow down for churches, small harbours, terraces and local food. A boat can add a coastal perspective when services run and sea conditions allow, but it is not a guaranteed substitute in bad weather.
Look beyond the five names
La Spezia offers museums, markets and a waterfront; Levanto adds a beach and a lived-in town centre. On a clear day, higher settlements and sanctuaries may be possibilities only if their official paths are open and appropriate. During adverse weather, stay off the trail network entirely.
A flexible itinerary is a safety tool. Save one indoor plan and one low-exertion plan before arrival, then make the final choice using same-day information.
