Choose La Spezia for connections
La Spezia is the stronger base when you arrive from Florence, Pisa or Rome, want a larger choice of accommodation, or need practical city services. The central station is the southern gateway to the village line. Evenings offer supermarkets, restaurants and a waterfront without requiring another trip into a crowded village.
Choose Levanto for the beach
Levanto sits north of Monterosso and feels more like a seaside town. It has a long beach, a walkable centre and useful access to routes north of the National Park. It suits travellers arriving from Genoa or Milan and anyone who wants a beach day that does not depend on fitting into Monterosso’s busiest spaces.
What both bases solve
Staying outside the five villages can mean larger rooms, easier luggage handling and calmer evenings. Both towns are included within the travel area of the Cinque Terre Train MS Card, but always check the exact product conditions for your dates.
Choose based on arrival direction and what you want after 18:00. If the trip is mostly hiking, compare access to the specific open routes you intend to use rather than assuming every trail starts in a village.
