Day one: understand the southern villages
Begin in Riomaggiore while the lanes are still relatively quiet. Walk from the station into the centre, explore the harbour and climb only as far as feels comfortable. Continue to Manarola for lunch and stay long enough to see the village from the path above the harbour. If the Via dell’Amore is part of your plan, check the Park’s current access and reservation rules before the day begins.
Finish in Corniglia. It sits above the sea rather than around a harbour, so the experience is different: slower, smaller and shaped by terraces. The station-to-village climb is substantial; use the local bus when available if stairs are a problem.
Day two: coast, trail and beach
Start in Vernazza, then choose between a verified open trail section and the train to Monterosso. Never treat an online itinerary as proof that a path is open. The Park’s live trail map and station information points are the references that matter that morning.
Give Monterosso the whole afternoon. Its beach, old town and flatter streets make it a useful final stop. This plan leaves room for missed trains, lunch and weather changes—the things that turn a checklist into a real trip.
Before leaving
- Check live trail access and weather alerts.
- Compare single rail tickets with the current Cinque Terre Train Card.
- Carry water and footwear suitable for steep stone surfaces.
