Where to Stay in the Cinque Terre: Five Villages, Five Different Trips

The best village is a practical decision

Because trains make the five villages feel close, travellers often choose accommodation from a photograph alone. But your base shapes every morning and evening. The useful questions are less romantic: how many stairs can you handle with luggage, how important is a beach, and do you prefer quiet or a wider choice of restaurants?

Monterosso: beach and breathing room

Monterosso has the broadest beach experience, the widest range of accommodation and more level ground than the other villages. Fegina offers a long seafront; the old town lies beyond the pedestrian tunnel. It works well for families, travellers with heavier luggage and anyone who wants to alternate hiking with a conventional beach day.

It is also the only Cinque Terre village served by some long-distance Intercity trains, which can simplify arrival.

Vernazza: harbour theatre

Vernazza compresses its drama into a small harbour, piazza and steep lanes. It is beautiful and extremely popular during day-trip hours. Staying overnight reveals a different village after the largest flows leave. Choose it for atmosphere and immediate coastal views, not for space or level walking.

Corniglia: distance from the rush

Corniglia sits above the sea rather than around a harbour. Reaching the centre from the station involves the long Lardarina staircase or the local shuttle when available. That separation discourages some hurried visitors and creates a quieter evening mood.

It suits walkers, readers and travellers happy to trade direct boat access for height, vineyards and a slower pace.

Manarola: compact and cinematic

Manarola’s small harbour and stacked houses create one of the coast’s most recognisable views. The village is compact, but its lanes still climb. It is a strong choice for couples and travellers who want to be close to both Riomaggiore and the vineyard paths toward Volastra.

Riomaggiore: energy and easy access from La Spezia

Riomaggiore has a lively main street, a steep harbour and a useful position at the southern end of the five villages. It is convenient for arrivals from La Spezia and for visitors with a reserved Via dell’Amore entry, which begins here under the current one-way system.

Before you book

Study the exact address on a topographic map. “Near the station” can still involve steps. Ask the host about luggage access, check cancellation conditions and do not assume every property has air conditioning or a lift.

Staying one night is already better than treating the villages as stations to collect. Staying two or three nights gives weather, appetite and curiosity room to change the plan.
