Day one: learn the geography
Arrive in the afternoon and settle into your base. Do not chase all five villages before dinner. Use the first hours to understand the station, gradients and direction of the light. Walk your own village properly, then choose one nearby place for sunset.
If you are based in Monterosso, Vernazza is a natural first contrast. From Riomaggiore, Manarola is close by train. Return for dinner where you are staying. The first evening should create orientation, not fatigue.
Day two: enter the landscape
Check the Park’s live trail status and the weather that morning. If a suitable section is open, begin early and make walking the central event of the day. Corniglia–Vernazza and Vernazza–Monterosso offer the classic coastal experience, but both involve sustained steps and exposed sections. They are not urban promenades.
If your fitness and conditions favour a higher route, consider paths through Volastra or the sanctuary network. Use official mapping or a qualified local guide. Stop for lunch rather than eating while moving; the table is part of the landscape too.
End the day in one village, not three. A swim, a glass of local white wine and an unhurried dinner will give you more than another frantic platform change.
Day three: see the coast from the water—or stay put
When sea conditions and seasonal services allow, a boat trip explains the geography better than any map. From offshore, the villages become small interruptions in a much larger wall of terraces and rock. Corniglia has no boat landing, so plan accordingly.
If the sea is rough, choose a beach in Monterosso, return to the village that interested you most, or spend time in Levanto or La Spezia. A good itinerary changes without feeling ruined.
The one-day temptation
Many guides propose all five villages in one day. It is technically possible by train, but the result depends on queues, heat and crowd levels. If you only have one day, choose three villages at most and start early. North-to-south can work well: Monterosso, Vernazza, then Riomaggiore or Manarola for evening light.
Keep a real Plan B
Heavy rain and weather alerts can close paths. Do not replace a closed coastal trail with an unfamiliar high route in poor conditions. Shift to food, churches, local history or nearby towns. Flexibility is not lost time here; it is how responsible travel works in steep terrain.
