Sunrise rewards quiet streets
At sunrise, the main advantage is not always direct sun on the water—it is space. Riomaggiore and Manarola become easier to observe before day-trippers arrive. Harbour views can still be partly shaded by steep terrain, so check the seasonal sun angle rather than trusting a single famous photograph.
Sunset needs a return plan
Manarola’s elevated harbour view is popular for good reason, while Riomaggiore offers dramatic layers around the marina. Monterosso provides an open horizon and space along the shore. Vernazza’s best-known viewpoints involve climbing; never use a trail section after closure or without suitable footwear simply to chase sunset.
Stay after the colour
The ten minutes after sunset often produce softer photographs and thinner crowds. Know the final practical train options, keep your phone charged and carry a small light for ordinary streets. Do not use a phone torch to continue onto an unfamiliar trail.
Cloud, haze and sea state matter more than rankings. Pick the village you would still enjoy if the sky remains grey.
