Climbing towards the top of the village we reach the majestic Riomaggiore Castle, also known as Castellazzo Castle. Originally built in 1260 by the Turcotti Marquises and later completed by the Republic of Genoa, this fortress has dominated the town for over seven centuries. Once a defensive bulwark against maritime raids, its imposing walls and two iconic circular towers house a space dedicated to culture and events today.
Stepping through its gates you’ll be sent back in time…but the real show awaits on its panoramic terrace: from here, you will enjoy one of the most spectacular and dizzying views in all of the Cinque Terre, with your gaze sweeping from the endless sea to the colorful rooftops of the village below. It is the perfect spot for those seeking an unforgettable photograph or simply a moment of contemplation at sunset.
The castle is easily reached with a short uphill walk from the Church of San Giovanni Battista. A must-visit for anyone wishing to discover the noblest and most ancient side of Riomaggiore.
